OpenClaw or Hermes Agent: which one to run

Two open-source AI agents under the MIT licence, with different strengths. What each one does well, according to their own documentation, and how to choose.

OpenClaw and Hermes Agent are both open-source AI agents under the MIT licence, both run on your own server and both talk to you through chat apps. They are alternatives, not add-ons to each other. OpenClaw is strongest at being present in many chat apps; Hermes Agent is strongest at learning procedures from its own work.

What is OpenClaw best at?

Reach. Its documentation lists WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Teams, iMessage and many more channels, all served by one gateway. State, memory and credentials stay on the machine it runs on, and models and coding harnesses are plugins you can swap. It also has the largest community and skill ecosystem of the open-source agents, which helps and, as ClawHavoc showed, also calls for care.

Choose it for an assistant that customers or a team reach in the apps they already use.

What is Hermes Agent best at?

Getting better at recurring work. Nous Research describes a closed learning loop: the agent creates skills from experience after complex tasks, improves them as it uses them, curates its own memory and searches its past conversations. It ships a scheduler that runs tasks such as daily reports or weekly audits written in plain language, and it can spawn subagents to work in parallel.

Choose it when the job is a set of procedures that repeat: summaries, reports, monitoring.

Which channels does each support?

OpenClaw covers more chat apps. Hermes Agent's gateway covers Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp and Signal, plus a full terminal interface. If your customers are on iMessage or Teams, that settles it for OpenClaw.

Which models can they use?

Both work with the provider you choose. Hermes Agent can also use Nous Portal, a subscription from Nous Research that covers the model and several tools. With either agent, you pay the provider directly and should set a spending cap.

Does the choice change the price with us?

No. We price by size, not by agent: from $55 per month managed, or $169 once on your server, whichever of the two you run. You can also start with one and move to the other later; our migration add-on moves the memory and configuration.

A rule of thumb

If people need to reach the agent, start with OpenClaw. If the agent mostly works on a schedule and should improve at it, start with Hermes Agent. Our comparison of the four agents puts both next to NemoClaw and the coding harness.
